Project II
Knowledge-Media Project

Interview video about this project

Name of Researcher:
Naoto Okude
Professor, the Faculty of Environmental Information,
and the Graduate School of Media & Governance, Keio University

Outline of Research:
Okude Laboratory practices a method for research and technological development of communication media. The method employed is a Real World Modeling. By way of this method, models can be developed directly from scenarios, which express a real world along with object-oriented programming language, such as JAVA. Knowledge representation in the media with meta-data organized by ontology is designed so as to focus on human communications through the media. This design approach thereby enables to take social contexts into contents. In short, the laboratory conducts study on Knowledge-Media, which facilitates acquisition, amplification and the media as IT home in future.

Details of the Research:
The laboratory uses object-oriented language, JAVA to develop contents while meta-data is described in XML. Further, relation among meta-data is written as ontology in DAML+OIL and OWL. The laboratory has recently adopted JXTA as peer-to-peer network technology and distributed cooperation type networks incorporating Jini. Frontier technology, such as Real-World modeling method has enabled the researchers of the laboratory to develop media furthering human communication.

Outline of research projects engaged

1, Media-Exchange applications
This project is engaged by undergraduate students. The project is intended to formulate computed applications for peer-to-peer communications. In this project, two teams are tackling development of a bookshelf model, and a closet model respectively. These media build virtual furniture and closet on the applications and accumulate logs, which represent communication process and user preference, on meta-data.
By sharing with your friends virtual furniture such as bookshelf and closet on network, you can learn favorite of your friend. Likewise by visualizing these meta-data development, these media serve as  reference data to buy and share products. The scope of the project development is going to  narrowed down into the development n a specific milieu for the furniture usage, in view to develop units.

2, Medcal-Informatics
This project is to develop a training system for intern doctors, graduate students in a master course tackle the project. with the anesthesiology lab of Keio University Hospital. The project deals with a case of a displacement surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm.
This project is meant to make a system, which dynamically expresses anesthetization by a preceptor, composing his knowledge through ontology focused on contexts and uses. This media further communications between preceptors and intern doctors and enable them to reduce operation time and support their knowledge sharing.

3, Learning-Communication Media
This project is meant to develop learning media on a context of nurturing flower. The project is tackled by graduate students. This is media to enable people to learn how to grow flowers through experiences by interactive actions and collaborations between learners connected by network. The media are built on a 3D virtual space.
Using the media, users can learn knowledge/information effectively from the relationship between media, their selves and otherneses represented by the media. It has an adaptive system for alterative context. The system uses a Bayesian-Network, which has a graph structure for knowledge processing to express incertitude casual links between information parameters.
